The comfort and security of how well a wig stays on your head is essential. Ultimately, a wig that fits snug to your scalp doesn’t shift as you move your head and feels comfortable throughout the day. This essential function of the wig gives you the confidence to wear it. Getting a good fit is often a combination of trial and error. Knowing some of the tricks of the trade and terminology used can really make a difference to understanding the small adjustments and accessories that make a big difference. A good fit helps

Firstly making sure your wig fits well is essential. A professional wig fitter will be able to help you determine the best fit. Initially if trying on a wig before hair loss starts, it can be difficult to know if your wig fits when trying on over hair, but wig fitters are very used to working out how the wig will need to fit after hair loss.

Wig sizes

The vast majority of ready to wear wigs come in a standard regular size which is approximately 54cm. This standard size is often referred to as a ‘standard wig cap – 54cm’. A smaller wig or ‘petite’ wig is normally a cap size of around 52cm. Some wig manufactures will also produce large size wigs where the cap is 55cm or larger.

What to do if your wig doesn’t feel like a secure fit and wig wearing comfort tips

Firstly if your wig has been purchased but not worn or altered in any way (e.g. cut to suit your face shape) then you should be able to get a refund or exchange. However as the vast majority of people will have their will snipped or shaped, the wig may not be returnable. It is always worth asking.

Adjustable elasticated belt straps

A little like a fine bra strap, an adjustable elasticated belt strap is sown inside the back (nape) of the wig to the right and left sides. Adjustable belt strap are by far the most common way to secure a wig. They are an ideal way to secure a wig over hair, a bare scalp, hair thinning or new-regrowth. Some belts are fastened using a hock or Velcro.

Most people tighten the straps before putting their wig on. Once your wig is on your head and in place you can then put your hands up inside the wig to alter the straps, loosening or tightening as appropriate.

Wig tape

Wig tape is a specially designed two sided tape that is firm enough to hold your wig to your scalp. The wig tape must be attached to an area of bare scalp where there is no hair. This means that if you are completely hair free or a long-term wig wearer it can be helpful. However belt straps or wig clips would need to be used if securing over hair (e.g. new hair growth).

Wig tape can be a good extra bit of security if your wig is feeling unsecure. It is helpful to ensure that your scalp is clean and free of grease to guarantee that the wig tape is extra secure. Some wigs have a small area that is plastic coated inside the wig which is specifically to attach wig tape to as sometimes tape won’t stay secure onto just a fabric weft.

Toupee tape

This is the same as wig tape but called toupee tape, traditionally for men.

Elasticated outer rim

Some wigs have an additional elasticated rim for extra fit. This tends to be an add on – for example a wig may have an elasticated rim and belt straps.

Wig glue

Regular wig glue

Some wigs, especially custom made wigs, hairpieces and hair replacements can be secured using wig glue. There are several different types of glue depending on the uses of your wig. The majority of wig glues will work best when glued to a bare scalp, however there are some glues that can be stuck to hair. Wig glue is deigned to go onto the scalp. Some come with a specific remover and others are removed with soap or cleanser and water.

Specialist wig glue

When it comes to hair replacement systems the glues used are so secure that in some cases the wearer can wear the system for up to two months at a time. Whilst regular top up applications may be needed, people can treat their hair as their own – sleeping, swimming and doing any type of activity.

Wig cap

A wig cap can be worn over hair or on a bare scalp to make the wig feel more comfortable. It is separate from the wig. Wig caps are an accessory made from fine elasticated fabric, shaped like one foot of a pair of tights (or a little footsie) that is worn as an under layer. A wig cap is put on the head before putting on the wig.

It really is a case of trial and error to see if a wig cap adds more comfort to you. It is worth a try if your wig is feeling uncomfortable or insecure.

Wearing a wig cap may help:

• If your scalp is very sweaty making your head wet as it can help absorb sweat
• If your wig feels as if it is slipping when worn over hair e.g. new hair growth (or you could try using wig clips)
• If your wig is itchy
• If you are getting an irritable, spotty or greasy scalp when wearing your wig
• When initially trying on wigs or headwear to gather and hide hair

Silk lining

A silk lining or fabric lining can be hand sown into a wig at a cost of around £30+. A lining often has silicone tapes added that help the wig to fit securely. Additionally, wig tape or wig clips can also be used.

A silk lining is ideal for added comfort and can help with anyone who is sensitive to the feel of the weft wig base. Silk linings can be fitted by a professional wig supplier but can also be hand sown on. Ensure that you don’t cover the inner adjustable belt straps if adding a silk lining yourself.

Wig clips

Clips in varying sizes can be hand sown strategically to the inside of your wig or hairpiece to help a wig fit securely when worn over hair or hair thinning. Following new hair growth after chemotherapy treatment, adding wig clips is an ideal way to add some extra security if you feel that your wig is prone to slipping.

Silicone

Silicone has a suction fitting action whereby the heat from the scalp enables the wig to fit perfectly without the need of glue, tape or wig belts. Silicone tabs may be added for extra security. The scalp must be bare for silicone to work.

Suction

Much like silicone a custom made suction wig may be made from a silicone or similar material that fits to your bare scalp.

Thin scarf or hair band

Many people like to customise as well as secure their wig with a thin scarf tied as a hair band. There really is no need to worry about causing damage to a wig by tying a scarf or fabric hair band over the top of your wig.

Using regular hair accessories

Sometimes it’s nice to change your wig a little or secure a section of hair that may be falling into your face or feel out of place. You can use most regular hair accessories on a weft base wig. Just be careful how you attach accessories making sure to not rip the base of the wig. Weft bases are more durable then other bases. If you have a very delicate lace or mesh fabric it’s not advisable to use hair grips or clips as you may damage the base.

Wearing glasses

We are often asked how to secure glasses when worn with a wig. Most wig fitters advise that the glasses should be worn over the top of the wig. But in our experience we know that many people find their own way that glasses feel comfortable without disturbing the look of the wig. It can be especially important to find a solution if you feel discomfort from the pressure of the glasses and wig worn together. Below are some tips for wearing glasses with a wig.

For weft base wigs you can try gently poking the glasses through the weft so that any pressure of wearing a wig on top of glasses is relieved.

Wig tape – Some people use a little wig tape to tape the arm of their glasses to their scalp.

Try wearing glasses over and under the wig to see the difference.

Try glasses straps – Ones designed for running have additional fastening at the back and can really help when worn over a wig.

Trim – You may need any loose hanging hair snipped to hang well around the arms on your glasses.

Talk to your optician for some ideas; e.g. it may be that a finer glasses arm may help.

Wearing a hearing aid

A little like wearing glasses, wearing a hearing aid with your wig may need some adjustments. Here are some tips:

Wig tape – Some people use a little wig tape to tape their hearing aids and stop the wig from shifting on the edges. Additionally, wig tape may help to secure the inside of your wig near the ear.

Ask your hearing aid supplier for some ideas.

Little peak mirror

Having a small mirror in your handbag can be a real help for when you want to check how your wig is looking.

Sweaty scalp

Try a wig cap, or if your scalp is bare you could try a roll on deodorant making sure it is non-greasy and completely dry before putting your wig on.
